Просмотров 13 тыс.Месяц назад
Well, it's been a heck of a week, folks. I'm still reeling a bit but wanted to share our dahlia process. When I started overwintering our dahlias in the ground and dividing in spring, folks thought I was nuts. Most farmers dig up the tubers in the fall and divide, storing all winter. And while we've done that before, we have losses in storage and it's a lot of work. I LOVE doing this instead so...

There's nothing wrong with building something that will eventually return to nature - as will all of us, of course. There's no good reason for creating a tripping hazard, however.

  • @vectorwolf

Sentiment aside, a path that's nothing but cracking, splintering, uneven wood is a severe trip hazard and unsafe. Imagine carrying a heavy pot and catching a toe on the jagged edge of one of those splitting stump sections. Hospital trip for sure.

My father had money but he refused to buy a gas powered lawn mower when I was a kid. I cut the lawn with one of those old fashioned metal non-mechanized mowers. It worked just fine. I find doing things the old fashioned way brings a great deal of satisfaction. It's a good workout, and you sleep like a baby at night after working hard.

Exactly we should be utilizing natural processes to live in harmony with Earth rather than destroying our own environment to produce things that will outlive us. Certainly some things should be "built to last" but we need to work on the full circle cycle of items from production all the way to recycling and reuse for that to even make sense.. and when there are better choices to be made, like using materials that can easily be taken care of by natural processes from beginning to end, we should do that. I agree and I like your path :)

I think it's pretty clear that the issue is not that it's returning to the soil. The issue is that you rely on it to walk on and it won't be as level and safe to walk on as the wood decomposes. You're also going to need to regularly replace and maintain the path. That's not necessarily bad, but when it's one of a billion things to replace and maintain, cumulatively, that could be a lot to deal with.
